El primero de enero a la tardecita a Denis se le ocurre mirar los emails de trabajo… hay un mail de Sam de la cancha de golf Redwood Canyon desesperado pidiendo ayuda… La cancha se inundò por la tormenta que paso durante la noche del 31… Linda forma de arrancar el año…
Y, ahí no màs… a la miércoles con nuestras vacaciones de un mes…
La oficina de la empresa cerrada, los patrones y ayudantes (todos familiares), todos de vacaciones en Galapagos…
Asi que ahi no màs Denis se metiò de lleno a ver què se podia hacer. El 2, un lunes soleado còmo nunca!!… se fue a ver el desastre que causo la tormenta y asesorar plan de ataque para arreglar todo…
La fuerza del agua removió puentecitos de madera de sus lugares, algunos flotaron unos metros corriente abajo; otros totalmente deslizados contra la banquina de arroyo.
Arroyo arriba, fuera de la propiedad de la cancha, se desmorono la pared de un cerro y esa tierra/barro, ramas, basura terminó en los fairways de la cancha…
On January 1st evening, Denis decided to check his work’s emails… That was the beginning and the end of our month off work… ha! ha!
Sam, from Redwood Canyon golf course had sent an email to DHR desperate asking for help. The storm from the night before had caused such damaged to the golf course that he didn’t know where to start…
Our main office closed for Christmas Holidays…, the bosses and main helpers, all family member, on holidays in Galapagos… so, Denis decided that he needed to respond to that email… That was the end of our holidays/vacation that didn’t even had the chance to start… ha! Ha! Ha! (not funny Jan!!…)
Also, it was a mud slide up the valley where the golf course is located so all that mud plus tree branches, debris ended up in the course’s fairways, in its creek; wooden bridges throughout the course were ether displaced to the embankment, or floated down stream…; fairways were covered in a disgusting slushy mud…, muddy water running freely throughout the course… It was a disaster…
Se decide esperar unos días porque hay demaciadsa agua y barro que casi, ni se puede entrar caminando… menos con maquinas… Sin ni percatarse que esto es solo el principio de un invierno de tormentas como nunca!!…
Y, còmo si esto fuera poco…, del otro lado del cerro de la izquierda hay un dique municipal… Sin ni siquiera avisarles a la cancha, de un día para el otro, alrededor del 10 de enero, empiezan a abrir las compuertas para aliviar la presión contra las paredes del mismo salvando de este modo los barrios de alrededor… Mejor que se inunde la cancha que las casas….
Asi que, lo poco que se pudo hacer, todo vuelta para atrás…
10 de enero - January 10th.
They decided to wait for a few days as the grounds were to soft to bring machines in, even it was hard to walked.
But nature had her own plans all together!… this was just the beginning…., it has been the wetter and snowy winter in like over 40 year, I think they said… The Sierras have so much snow that some sky resorts are saying they’ll be open until July!
To make matter worth…, the reservoir above the golf course, overnight and without warning…, started to release water because county was concerned that its walls might burst and flooded the neighborhoods around it…, so… they flooded the course even more!…
Lluvia y tormentas siguen durante todo enero haciendo el trabajo de reparación imposible…Febrero se porta mejor!, nos da varios días de sol y algunos de lluvias; la cordillera Sierra Nevada a lo largo de California ha ligado una cantidad astronómica de nieve!! A pesar de daños en varios sectores del estado/provincia, la gente está contenta porque se cortò la sequía terrible de los últimos años!!
La cantidad de barro sobre toda la cancha es impresionante…, ni saben què hacer o dònde ponerlo… en algunas parte tenìa hasta como 60 cm de alto. Decidieron armar una pila hacia el costado de uno de los fairways. Denis contaba que, al volcar el barro sobre el terreno, sobre la pila ya empezada, èste parecía lava!!…, la volcaban y se desparramaba, movía tipo lava!
We had a stream of atmospheric rivers (as they called this kind of on going storms), one after another throughout January, making the repair of the golf course nearly imposible… The county still lets water out of the reservoir, so nothing is helping to improve the course.
Finally February brings some sunny days and, of course!, some shower too! But DHR’s teams managed to do some work. They put bridges back to their sports, fixed approaches to them; removed slushy mud from access roads and cart path; started cleaning some of the fairways where ground is not to soft for the machines to sunk…
Not having any more room where to pile the runny, thick mud they decided to build some mounts to a side of fairways. Denis was telling me, as they were dumping the mud onto the pile, the mud, slowly, ran away down the slop like live lava!! Ha! ha!
Se colocaron los puentes de vuelta a sus lugares, removieron ramas, troncos, arboles, borro y demàs de sectores adentro del arroyo; removieron el barro de los caminos de los carros de golf; la cancha va tomando color a lo que era… Al pepe… llegò marzo con todo su furor de lluvias…
Còmo lloviò… Tormenta tras tormenta… Primera o tercera?,… ya ni sè que nùmero de inundación…, la foto dice 16 de marzo… Màs inundaciones, màs barro, daño a todo lo arreglado…, por suerte los puentes aguantaron en su lugares!
Otra màs el 23 de marzo que ni se puede volver a hacer arreglos porque el terreno està tan saturado de agua que imposible hacer nada…
But… March comes alone with another set of atmospheric river storms… Man!… all that time fixing bridges, carts path… all wasted… All that effort and time thrown out the window… Another big flood on the 16th and golf course is, nearly, back to square one as of
1srt of January… lucky, this time, bridges hold to their spots, approaches were damaged and one or other bridge need repair; fairways full of less slushy mud as, this time, is merrily dirty water running through them.
Another big flood on the 23rd and the team decided to put everything on hold until raining season is over…
Thou it sounds like a terrible winter actually it was really good because, now, California is out of years of drought and little snow in the Sierras!
Y acà!, es dònde nosotros nos vamos… ji! Ji! El trabajo quedò suspendido hasta que mejorara el tiempo, ya en estas semanas deberìan poder volver, si se terminò el invierno, la temporada de lluvias! Con suerte logran acomodar la cancha para el juego del verano!
That is when we leave…!! Ha! ha! Off to Hawaii!!
Oh!… y cómo Denis ya estaba enchufado con trabajo en esa cancha decidió seguir trabajando en otras cosas que fueron saliendo al paso…, y si no salían las inventaba!! ja! ja! Ayudo en la oficina y volvió a ordenar el galpón de la empresa…, fue a ayudar a otros capataces en sus trabajos.
As worked kicked off quite strong for Denis right from day one… he decided to use the rest of the days to keep working… He re organized the company’s yard again…, helped in the office; helped other formen in their jobs.
