En un abrir y cerrar de ojos se me escapó Hawaii!… Ni tuve tiempo de traer la bici ni relajarme y disfrutar… Ya nos fuimos, ya estoy extrañando!
Our time in Hawaii was way to short this year… I didn’t have time to bring my bike, neither to relax or enjoy the island… we were gone just like that!…
Vinimos a fin de marzo, pasando por Maui a juntar valijas y saludar amigos!
Los Coscarelli, como siempre!, nos re mimaron! Aparte de buscarnos y llevarnos al aeropuerto…, nos invitaron a un riquísimo desayuno, al mejor estilo Argentino!! Una caja llena de facturas!! Hay una chica argentina que empezó vendiendo facturas en su casa hace unos años y este año abrió un negocio cerca del centro.
Nos juntamos con Jara, Chris y Lorien en nuestro parque preferido a ver el atardecer con un rico picnic! Jara esperando a Noah! (naciò en abril)
We went to Hawaii at the end of march, stopped in Maui to pick up our stuff and to see our friends; final destination Big Island. I love Big Island!
Coscarelli family spoiled us from the moment we put our feet in Maui! Picking and taking us to the airport, yummy dinners, a delicious breakfast at its best Argentinian style!: a box of hand made Argentinian pastries! with a nice coffee! There is an Argentinian lady that started making Argentinian pastries at home, now she has opened a shop close to the center.
Also, we all met with Jara, Chris and Lorien for a lovely evening!, picnic at our favorite park! Jara was expecting Noah that born in April.
Para el 3 de abril se arranca el trabajo, nos instalamos en un departamento en Waikoloa Beach, planta alta, suerte nada màs que 3 pisos!
Balcón con vista a la cancha de golf y hacia los cerros! Una belleza!
Lamentablemente Estados Unidos es tan retrasado con el sistema de aires acondicionados que arruinan todo tipo de “no ruido”… En este complejo todos los departamentos tienen la caja del aire instalada en el balcón…! El ruido es tal que ni se puede sentar en el balcón a apreciar el lugar…
Entonces, el nuestro está apagado porque, acostumbrados al calor, el clima todavía no es caluroso para prender el aire. Nos encanta el aire fresco de la nochecita y noche! Pero los que vienen de continente…, chau!, el aire a mil… todo el día… toda la noche… un embole de aquellos…
Ya que estoy.., sigo…, protestando… ja! Ja! Ja!… y los turistas!!!… ja! Ja! Ja! Como vienen por 4 o 5 noches… el quilombo! Charlas y risas fuertes hasta cualquier hora…
Moraleja… nunca màs un depto en un complejo. (Nunca digas nunca!!…)
Hago (y hacemos!) caminatas diarias a la mañana y a la nochecita, sòlo yo a la mañana. Estamos muy cerca de la playa asi que el circuito, muchas veces, incluye el sendero contra el agua! O sino, simplemente alrededor de lo que se llama Waikoloa beach, una zona de hoteles y complejos de departamentos para el turista o sus propios dueños. Todo una belleza!
On the 3rd of April, the job started. We settled into an apartment at Waikoloa beach area, on the 3 floor, luckily it had an elevator that was very handy to take all our stuff and groceries on the dates of shopping!
The apartment was not to big, no to small; a nice balcony looking towards a golf course and the mountains! Very pretty view!
Thou…!, the air conditioners’ spoiled it all…. Grrr! The noise coming out of each one in each unit was so annoying… the romantic idea to sit in the balcony sipping a nice cup of coffee soon went out the window!! Ha! Ha! Ha! US has not improved at all in regards of A/Cs…, they still use these old fashion, push air boxes nosies as… Unbelievable…
Each balcony had the A/C box install right there… we normally hardly use AC but everyone else around us did… And, if we would’ve wanted to run it… the noise from the out side box and it unit inside it drives us crazy…
Also…, here we go!, as I’m complaining,… lets complain a little more…. “The tourist”… another way of noises… Ha! Ha! Ha! Loud chatting, laughter, music, etc., hey are on holiday so they don’t care. One day, one group staid loudly talking until 2 am… Never again will rent a condo… :(
I do daily walks in the morning; then, with Denis in the evenings, a short one, and, on weekends a longer one!
We are very close to the ocean so the circuit normally includes a section of the coast line! Very pretty. This area, everything is very green due to the use of irrigation, if not it would’ve been just lava! So the contrast between the lava and the green, and the blue ocean is gorgeous!!
Apenas llegamos notamos que los dos volcanes, al alcance de nuestras vistas! están nevados!! Nieve en Hawaii!! Ja! Ja! Ja! De locos! Mauna Kea a la izquierda con los telescopios,
Mauna Loa hacia la derecha, con una forma màs suave, prácticamente un ascenso gentil, sin casi lomas en sus laderas que interrumpan esa linea suave! Me encanta!, en el 2020 lo bauticé “Ella” y “Preciosa”! O sea, cuando me refería a ese volcán… asi lo llamaba!
Ahi no màs, el primer domingo libre, nos vamos a jugar a la nieve!! Una mañana espectacular! Fresca pero divina!, solazo total!, sin viento, normalmente sopla ventarrón a estas alturas, unos 13802 pies / 4207 m de altura a nivel del mar. No andaba nadie!, apenas si cruzamos un auto que otro. Al camino que lleva a la cima le han dejado una sección de tierra para restringir el turismo; si uno no tiene un auto con 4x4, de cierta altura del piso y apropiado para un camino empinado, de tierra, no te dejan subir. El asfalto solo llega hasta el centro de información ubicado a 10000 pies / 3000 m (m’às o menos), aquí hacen el control.
Ese mismo dia, a la tardecita!, vamos a la playa!! Ja! Ja! Ja!
No even a day in Big Island and we noticed that the 2 volcanos closer to us have snow on them! Snow in Hawaii!!, crazy!
Mauna Kea to our left, with the telescopes and the one that attracts the tourists;
Meona Loa to our right with a lovely, smooth slope without hardly any “lumps” that interrupts your view!, the one that spewed some lava in 2022 after we left… In our stay in 2020 I give it the nickname of “She” and “Gorgeous”! She is gorgeous, anyway!!
Denis started saying that “on Sunday we go up to Mauna Kea”, so we did!! A gorgeous, blue skies Sunday!, off we went! Normally it is very windy up at this elevation of 13802 ft / 4207 m but today no! Very little tourist to no one to be seen! too; due to that at the information center at an altitud of around 10000 ft / 3000 m if you don’t have 4WD, all WD and a high car, they don’t let you go to the summit because the road is very steep and no asphalt in some sections; most people burn their brakes on the way down…
So!!!, we had the whole mountain for ourselves!!! The snow didn’t disappointed us!, gorgeous view all around!, took a couple of pics!, laid down on the snow! Enjoyed the moment and, on the same day, in the afternoon we went to the beach!! Crazy!!
Alexandra
El domingo que llegamos a la Isla Grande, fuimos a un pueblito a 20 minutos hacia los cerros, Waikoloa Village al super a buscar alimentos esenciales para arrancar la semana, ya que yo, el martes o miércoles iría al centro (40 minutos) a hacer la compra grande. Mientras mirábamos la heladera de los helados y comentábamos què llevar o no, una señora que estaba en las mismas, se nos pone a charlar!, intercambiar ideas de cuál es el mejor o no, cuál tiene màs azúcar o peor leche o ni crema… Y de ahi, la charla continue: de dònde son?, què hacen?, blah!, blah! Blah!… fuimos juntos hacia la caja a pagar, siempre charlando; nosotros tardamos màs, ella nos espera afuera para seguir charlando!! Ja! Ja! Ja! Ya casi que nos podemos llamar amigos!!!… tal cual!, saca una tarjeta con su número y me dice: “vos que no haces nada, algún día podemos ir a la playa juntas, o hacer algo”!!… ja! Ja!
Ni lerdos ni peresozos!, me contacto durante la semana y organizamos para ir a la playa el domingo siguiente, con Denis! Asi arranca nuestra amistad con Alexandra!
Un jueves me invita para ir a ver el “open house”, casa abierta de la basa militar que hay en la isla. Creo que se lleva a cabo una vez al año. Abren las puertas al público, uno puede ver ciertas secciones, tienen muestras, stands, donde explican ciertos proyectos que desarrollan en la isla, información a lo que las distintas ramas del ejercito hace o los estudios y carreras que uno puede seguir dentro de ls mismas: información para entusiasmar al civil a incorporarse al ejercito (armada, naval, aviación, tierra, lo que sea)
Vimos algunos de los helicópteros y charlamos con los pilotos y ayudantes. Interesante pero no, no gracias! Ja! Ja!
Fuimos con un amigo de Alexandra, ingeniero retirado, que había hecho varias construcciones de edificios para la armada norteamericana. No parò de charlar!, se sabia todo… y sino, lo inventaba!! Ja! Ja! Lindo porque nos mantuvo bien entretenidas!!
Ese mismo dìa, Alexandra, me avisa que una amiga cumple años el 19 de mayo y que le preguntò si nos podìa llevar!! Fuimos!, lo pasamos muy bien! Al día siguiente, de casualidad, nos volvimos a ver de pasada en Kona con gente que conocimos en la fiesta!! Ahora tendremos conocidos en la Isla Grande!!
On our arrival day to BI, after dropping all our stuff and checking up the condo, we went to Waikoloa Village, a few km/miles up the hill, close to us to get the essentials groceries to start the week; Tuesday or Wednesday I will go for the big grocery shopping into Kona that is is like 40 to 50 minutes drive.
As we are standing up at the ice cream fridge there was a lady our edge or just a bit older looking at them too. Of course the conversation started: witch one is best, with one you like, with one had more sugar or less…, more artificial stuff or better quality ingredients… 10 minutes later… the 3 walked to the registers, keep talking!, by now is more: where are you from?, what is your accent?, what do you
do?… ha! Ha! Ha! She finished paying first so she says goodbye and moves on but always looking back to as like wanting to keep talking! She waited for us outside and kept talking!! Ha! Ha! So, Alexandra hands me her business card and tells me: “as you don’t do anything… one day we can go to the beach or do something together”! Ha! Ha! Ha! Loved her quotation…
So we did!! That same week I called her so she wouldn’t forgotten about us!, we organized to go to the beach that first Sunday after we went up to Mauna Kea.
Then, one Thursday I went with her and a friend to see an open house at the military base camp on island, up on the so call “Saddle Road” that connects the west with the east sides, Hilo to Kona.
Her friend, a retired engineer that, actually, did a lot of work for the government building buildings for army bases; he didn’t stop talking!, he knew it all! Ha! Ha! Ha! He kept us very informed and talked to everyone of the army, air or navy that he could!! It has a very interesting couple of ours spent!
On our way back, I went with Alexandra, she tells me that a friend of her is having a party for her husbands birthday and she has already asked her if she (Alexandra) can take us!; if we would be interested to go with her!! On May 19!
So, we went!! Ha! Ha! We had a great time, a nice bunch of people. And!!…, on Saturday we went for a stroll to Kona pier and we sew a few of those people, everyone happy saying hello! It was a canoe competition in town and a few of “our new friends”!, were there! Nice coincidence!
Now, Hawaii is getting nicer to go back! Hopefully next year we can see them again.
Un sábado a la mañana que arranca nublado y nosotros nos despertamos re temprano (al pepe…!!!) aprovechamos y caminamos “el camino del rey Kamehameha”! Toda una leyenda hawaiana pero lindo circuito!
Sendero sobre la lava, te cocinas si no està nublado…, lo tomamos ahi no màs desde casa que, casi en linea recta, nos lleva a la otra zona hotelera, Mauna Lani, tomando S Kaniku Dr hacia el mar nos vamos dirigiendo hacia la playa de arena negra! Sin bajar a ella, aqui tomamos el sendero que bordea el mar llamado “sendero de los pescadores”. Cruzando entre o enfrente de canchas de golf y hotels, casas privadas, departamentos nos dirigimos hacia el sur volviendo hacia casa.
La zona es una belleza! Casas y departamentos multimillonarios!, canchas de golf hermosamente cuidadas, todo verde entre los campos de lava! Varias casas con piletas infinitas!: con el lado hacia el mar sin borde entonces da la sensación de infinito cuando uno esta nadando! Je!, sòlo lo sè porque nuestro complejo tiene una!, pero da a la cancha… no tanta sensación de infinito!! Ja! Ja!
Se cruza todo enfrente del hotel Hilton, enorme y caro!, con varias piletas, todo un canal que te pasan de hotel a hotel con un barquito elèctrico!, hasta tiene una playita interna. Toda la costa en esta zona es lava, no hay playa de arena. Otras piletas artificiales con delfines que los hacen hacer piruetas, uno puede nadar con ellos, darles de comer. Todo a una buena suma de dinero!! Ja! Ja! Nosotros los miramos a la pasada!!
Pero es re lindo para caminar con el fresco del mar!
El hotel que esta mas cerca de casa, sobre una bahía con una playa linda, entre la playa y los jardines del mismo, están las piletas de agua de mar que originalmente hacían los nativos para pescar; con compuertas atrapaban los peces en piletas para hacerles màs fácil la pesca y crianza para seguir con la cadena alimenticia. Siempre nos paramos a mirar los peces! Aquí ya tomamos hacia casa terminando el circuito de este sábado!

On a Saturday overcast morning we decided the hike part of the Kin Kamehameha trail that runs over the lava along the east coast of the island. Later in the day is always way to hot for us to take on this hike.
We start right there from outside of our complex, due north towards the next set of hotels and condos complexes at Mauna Lani area. Looking inland the gorgeous Mauna Kea and Loa all the way up there, lava fields with some vegetation trying to poke their life through this rough environment. To our left sections of lava well mix with buildings, golf courses and all the beautiful vegetation growing happily thanks to irrigation! The ocean we can’t see it yet.
Reaching S Kaniku Dr we move towards the ocean walking through the streets of one of many private houses’ complexes. At Black Sand Beach 49 we miss it turning up and south towards the trail that follows the coast line. We walked pass a lovely well set, beautiful hole number ??… with a great panoramic view!: the ocean, multimillion houses, the coast line and far away hotels!
We follow the “fisherman trail” all alone the coast, through golf courses; in front and in between hotels’ front yards and swimming pools!; in front of the multimillion dollars house with infinite view swimming pools! Everything is so pretty, well kept, very green! Walked all alone the front of the splendorous Hilton hotel with many swimming pools, gorgeous gardens, a man made cannel with an electric little boat that one take to move from one hotel to the other…; the dolphins touristy area where one can feed and swim with well kept dolphins…
Finally we getting close to home, another expensive hotel, just a short distance from home, with a nice sandy beach, most hotels do not have beaches due that the coast line is lava terrain. In this area there are some fish ponds well preserve that are dated from the original Hawaiian people; they used to build this ponds to catch and keep the fish for food. We always stop here to look at the fishes!
Moving inland, through the Kin Kamehameha shops we are back at home!

Aprovechando la cocina grande y por la demanda del novio!, hago dulce de leche (infaltable en nuestras giras!) y chutney de dáteles y agrándanos. Riquísimos los dos!
Creo que tenemos como 5 cacerolas para hacer dulce de leche!, y està prohibido cocinar cualquier otra cosa en las mismas!… mmm! Capaz màs! Dos en Australia, una de como 20 litros que hacia para la reposterìa que vendía…, 3 en California: una compramos cuando nos quedábamos con Joy y quedò ahi; otra en casa, otra embalada para los viajes de trabajo… 2 en Hawaii en distintas islas! Nos cansamos de llevarlas de una a otra así que ahi dejamos una en Oahu y otra que, por ahora ha viajado de Maui a la Isla Grande… creo que ya me pase de 5 no?… ah y en Africa también compramos una que quedo con la familia Schuurs!
Los vidrios estaban asquerosos… con un poco de ingenio logramos limpiarlos un poco…
I have a spacious kitchen so I displayed my culinary skills and, by demand by my lovely man, I made dulce de leche!; and chutney that we always like!, now days I’m using a recipe of dates and fresh cranberries, very delicious!
I think we must have like 5 dulce de leche making pots around the world!, they can not be used to cook anything else in them… Ha! Ha! Or.., maybe more…! 2 in Australia, a big one and a small one; 3 in California: 1 at my sister’s in law house, one at home and one at the yard with the our stuff that travels while working in mainland; 2 or 3 in Hawaii in different islands…, we got tired of packing and unpacking our house’s stuff so we leave them in each island as the company have property in each one. Easy to storage stuff! 1 in Africa that we bought over Christmas to make dulce de leche for the Schuurs family!
Windows were very dirty… with help from the “mop”!!, Denis cleaned them a bit!!
Volviendo a Hawaii, a mitad de abril me tuve que ir a California por unos días… 3 semanas màs tarde… logrè volver… un embole total… por eso que ni pude disfrutar Hawaii… entre esto y que de 3 meses que íbamos a estar, terminaron el trabajo en 2… se me acabaron las vacaciones sin ni pensarlo…
Al dia siguiente de volver a casa Hawaii vinieron los suegros a visitarnos! George y Norma se quedaron unos 5 días porque nosotros
ya empezábamos a desembalar la casa y el trabajo!! Ja! Ja! Lo pasamos re lindo!, bah, espero que ellos también! Algunos paseitos cortos por la mañana, siempre almuerzo y siesta en casa!, después lo buscábamos a Denis y hacíamos algo màs cortito o sino a casa. Fuimos a la playa un par de veces, nuestra preferida Kukio Beach!
Going back to Hawaii!!…, on the 23rd of April I had to leave to California for a few days to take care of some things, 3 weeks later… I just managed to get back to Big Island only to find out that… in 2 weeks we were going back to California… job was finished… Nooo! I haven’t finished enjoying the warm/hot weather, the island, I’m not ready to go back… Ha! Ha!
48 our later of putting foot on island we were back at the airport receiving my in laws for a week! Not a day longer because I was packing the house up! Time to go!…
We had a lovely visit!, we did short trips in the morning, back home for lunch as all of us are advanced on edge!! Ha! Ha! George is 90 this year, Norma just a couple of years younger!
After a nice short siesta we will go to do something else, or rest at home or pick Denis up from work; they love checking up on Denis’ jobs!
Over the weekend we all went to the beach a couple of times!
El finde largo de mayo, nos fuimos a Maui a visitar y despedirnos de los amigos porque no volvemos hasta abril 2024… lo pasamos re lindo y nos vimos con todos! Increíble còmo uno puede meter tantas cosas en apenas 48 horas!
Con los Coscarelli nos fuimos en busca de aire frio!, hacia arriba! Una sección de árboles a mitad camino del volcán Haleakala. Nos ca… de frio!! Ja! Ja! Pero pasamos un rato de familia hermoso! “Los abuelos postizos” re disfrutaron de los adolescentes no tan adolescentes!! Uno de 16 y la otra de 12 años!
Que lindo se ha convertido Hawaii al tener amigos!
On May long weekend we went to visit our friends in Maui!, before leaving Hawaii, ...missing them already…, glad we are coming back next year!
We had a great time and managed to see them all and do a couple of outings!, incredible how much one can fit in 48 hours!!
With Coscarelli family we went up hill on Haleakala slops, in a chased of cold weather! We find it in did!, was very cold! Had a nice picnic, a walk through the forest with our step grandkids!!, if we can call them like that! It is very pretty up there! and a relaxing!
We met Noah (just over a month old) visiting Jara and her family. Had lunch with an old friend of Denis from boarding school, he’ve been living in Maui for ever!
It is so nice to come back to Hawaii each year now that we have friends!
