Por fin!, llegamos a Kauai!

Debido a la propaganda que tiene de ser la isla màs linda, siempre hemos querido ir pero nunca nos decidíamos… con lo cual, cuando nos dijeron que íbamos a ir a trabajar!, chochos de tener la oportunidad de conocer èsta isla!

Bue… totalmente diferente a lo que esperábamos vivir…Siempre se dijo que es la màs linda (mmm….), la màs verde (correcto!), la menos poblada, la màs hawaiana… (incorrecto…)

De solo ver que había un Costco supermercado ya lo arruino todo en respecto a “la màs hawaiana….” O sea, a nivel negocios están todas las cadenas grandes de USA de supermercados, negocios de herramientas, ropa, restoranes…. A la miércoles “la màs hawaiana…”! Ja! Ja! Ja!

Sì, màs hawaiana en el sentido de la gente local; pero son tercera o cuarta generación, mayormente, de filipinos… dònde vayas el idioma que màs se escucha hablar, es filipino!, en todas partas… de locos… No se ve tanto hawaiano descendiente de polinesio, que es el original, como hay en las otras islas… Asi què… desilusión numero 2!!… ja! Ja!

Y como belleza… no nos atrapò… Para mi demasiado verde… ja! Ja! A mi me gusta màs lo árido… Pero, bueno, no voy a negar su belleza! Y, la mejor de las islas en respecto a las playas: hermosas! Arena linda, suave, anchas y largas!, con una panorámica de mares azules, celestes y claritos divinos!

El mar en si bastante bravo, en todas partes y en las revistas locales, hablan de correntadas fuertes, de cuidar mucho dònde uno se baña, aconsejando ir a las playas con guarda vidas.

Finally!, we visited Kauai!

We have always wanted to come to this island but, for one reason or another, never made it. So, last year when we find out Denis was going to be assign to a job here, we were very happy!

Not quite what we were expecting… Everyone talks of been the most Hawaiian island…, the less populated…, the most beautiful… (mm…)

Just seen that there was a Costco store plus the most common chain fast foods and restaurants, clothing shop, and hardware stores… out of the window with been the “most Hawaiian”… Also, its majority population is descendants of Filipino rather than Polynesians like in other islands. The Polynesians are the first humans to come to Hawaiian islands.

Then, the most pretty… well, yes if you like the full on vegetation and green, tropical at its best!…, but, it’s not the scenery we like the most so, for us is not quite “the most”… tho, we do not denied its beauty!

It is the best of the island regarding its beaches!, gorgeous beaches!: long, wide, white and soft sand; lots of them! Tho the surf is, again, quite rough, or can be, like in all islands. Everywhere are signs or information for the tourist about strong currents, not swimming if there are not life guards, etc.

Alquilamos un departamento a 4 minutos en auto, de la cancha!; en frente del puerto principal, en un complejo sobre un camino principal y ùnico en el barrio… ruidoso como èl solo… desastre total… sin comentarios…

Muy linda vista! Hasta vimos un par de ballenas!

Del otro lado de la calle hay un parque, Nawilliwilli, dònde, prácticamente todos los días, después del colegio, les enseñan a los chicos jugar al futbol americano. Lindo entretenimiento, escucharlos y verlos practicar.

Disfrutamos del balcón un montón!, nos sentábamos a la tardecita, ha hacernos “la película” de la gente que iba y venia al complejo! Chismeábamos el movimiento del puerto, desde ver còmo descargaban las balsas hasta divertirnos mirando los turistas de los cruceros! Lo invitè a Denis varias veces a “comer afuera”!, ja! Ja! Ja!

Lo no tan lindo del mismo, es que se llena de homeless, gente de la calle…, màs que nada que viven en sus autos… juntan tanta porqueria, mugre; es muy feo. Un día conté 17 autos que durmieron ahi… Tan ahi de un parque usado por niños…

Condo: Denis wanted to stay close by the job site, it was quite hard to find something reasonable rentable so…, we stayed at the only accessible cheaper resort in Lihue… on the only and main road of the area; across from the main port…., so… terrible noisy… a total disaster… Tho, great views!! We even saw a couple of wales from our balcony!

Across the road, there is a pretty park where, after school ours, kids learn how to play American football; very entertaining!

We enjoyed the balcony quite a lot!, sat looking and inventing life of the resort’s guest coming and going!! Looked at the activity in the port every time a barde came in and did “good gossip”, guessing of the tourist coming on the cruises!! Also, I invited Denis to “dine out” a few times!! Ha! Ha!

The not to nice of the park is that it fills up with homeless…., they stay overnight, some even for weeks, paling trash, rubbish around them…, one day I counted 17 cars… pretty disgusting. On a park that is so used by kids…, no good.

Me habían dicho que no era aconsejable andar en bici porque las rutas, calles o caminos no tienen casi banquina pero la traje igual porque vì que algo podia andar! Me fui para todos lados!!, a no mucha distancia pero logre recorrer lugares, que de otra forma, no “hubiéramos” (ustedes y yo!!) visto!

Pase por dos o tres caminos algo arriesgado pero no volvì a transitarlos… Y me encontré el de “desconexión total!!!” Una calle sin marcas, poco y nada de transito porque solo va hasta un barrio muy chico, el cual, antes se conectaba con nuestra zona, a travez de un puentesito medio descangallado; con lo que hoy es solo para peatonales y ciclistas!!

Un paseo de paz entre campos de pastos verdes, altos, vaquillas aquì y allà, siguiendo un valle con un cordon montañoso hacia un costado, belleza total! Una parada a la vista paronàmica nos deja apreciar la paz y belleza del lugar! Parè cada vez que pase por ahì; abajo un dique que ya explicarè màs abajo sobre el mismo.

En una sección del paseo hay una arboleda hermosa de unos àrboles altos, de muchas ramas y poco follaje, que uno puede ver el cielo a través de su copa! Como estamos entrando en la primavera, el ùltimo paseo vi que estaban llenos de flores! Una belleza!

Desde el mismo camino salían dos hacia la derecha y dos hacia la izquierda!… de los dos conectando con el pueblo Lihue, uno lo pasamos en auto y me agarro el antojo de pasarlo en bici!!, curva contra curva y un par de lomitas!, rodeado de àrboles, vegetacion tropical! Espectacular!! Para el otro lado, había visto una calle, en google map, que mostraba que bajaba al rio, seguía costeando y subiendo el cordon montañoso hasta la playa del otro lado pero…. Es propiedad privada… grrr!, solo llegue hasta la tranquera cerrada… igual valió la pena, belleza total! Un par de descampados chicos, potreros con vaquillas!, se cruza un arroyo grandísimo; todo muy hermoso!

Al otro no lo hice porque parecía llevaba a la otra punta del dique, no es transitado, y hay mucho homeless (gente de la calle); en bajada empinada… prefería no meterme!

La vuelta me llevaba por el puerto también! Parè mil veces a ver la vista divina del valle con su dique y cordòn montañoso!, una belleza!!

I was told not to bring my bicycle because the roads and streets are not bike friendly… I brought it anyway!, moved it from one island to another! And had a lots of fun!

Rode a couple of roads only ones because of their unfriendly biking stages…; and fund the most gorgeous, pleasant one!

This one, meandering through farm land on a sort of flat terrain; to one side a line of mountains, to the other and far away, the town. It used to be a road to Lihue but the small connecting bridge is not suitable for cars any longer; so there is little traffic to nothing!

Had many pleasant bike rides, looking at its beautiful vegetation, stopping at the valley look out! Gorgeous changing views of the river and the valley!

There are 2 roads going off to each side of this main one. Two connecting to town, one we drove with Denis and I put it in my bucket list to visit on my bike!, meandering, small road, through a couple of small hills mostly under a canopy of trees! Very pretty!

Of the tow off the other side, I checked the one that google maps shows as going all the way to the mountains, following its contours up to a small pass to the beach on the other side; defiantly I want to be on that road!!…, a nice gate with a lovely sign of Privet Property, do not trespassing stopped me right there… whatever!, the open to public section, it is beautiful!, lots of trees, farm land on the other side of the trees, some cows! And a creek! Very nice!

The other one didn’t go because it seemed to go to the end of the dam, the terrain was very steep and there are lots of homeless in the area so…, better safe than sorry!

The way back took me to go by the port! Stopped many times to the gorgoues valley lookout!!

Uno de los paseos peligrosos me llevò, por el camino de arriba… a una playa. El mismo casi sin banquina o vereda o, lo poco que había, era un pastizal que las pastos me rayaban hasta el brazo… En la trayectoria, bajada a la playa, siguiendo un arroyito, pasando por abajo de lo que pareciera un puente de camino abandonado…, lleno de homeless… una mugre… olor… demasiados…; hasta en la parte del parque de la playa… Asi que no tan lindo… Encima, en la playa una mugre traiga por el mar…, millones de pedacitos de plàsticos, de todo tipo de colores, grosores, y tamaños; pedazos de redes de pescar; boyas, maderas, palos… de todo… Una pena… Un primer paseo no tan agradable…

Igual me busque la vuelta, por el lado, cerca del aeropuerto que los caminos son màs amplios, y la visite una vez màs… Hanamaulu Baech, playa. Un día, también, lo invite a Denis a hacer un picnic ahi!! Asi conocía!

Muelle viejo que solo se usa para pescar, en la punta de la bahia de èsta playa.

The first time that I rode to a beach, I chose the upper road through town and neighborhoods… well…, so scary… there is a good stretch of it that is not bike friendly at all…, no shoulder, no walk side or the little it is, is covered by grass and shrubs so tall that scratched my arms…

Then, the street to the beach, down hill, closer to the beach full, to each side of it, of homeless… Terrible…. The smell, trash everywhere, destroyed cars that they live in…, so horrible. At the toilet block and picnic table, in the park again, more homeless… no pretty at all.

At the beach more trash but different, these are from what the ocean brings in, millions of little pieces of plastic, rope, buoys, floats, anything you can think off… So sad.

An passed due date pier at the entrance of the bay this beach is located. Now is only used by fisherman.

Otro recorrido, saliendo hacia el lado del aeropuerto con rumbo a la playa de Kauai, al lado de otro complejo grande de departamentos de vacaciones, con una avenida hermosa de àrboles con troncos y ramas raras! Una vez saliendo del pueblo, màs descampado, a lo lejos se ven las montañas hermosas hacia un lado; el resto, hacia el mar, chato; terreno casi sin trabajar, alguna vaquilla suelta por ahi, una plantación de bananas, hasta llegar a la playa. En èsta, tambien, alguno que otro homeless, mucha mugre traiga por el mar; igual!, otro rincón lindo para volver a visitar!

La vuelta no es tan linda porque hay poca vanquina, mucho tràfico entrando al pueblo, poco espacio…

Un dìa me aventure a pasar màs allà de este punto, hacia el norte y revente la cubierta delantera porque los caminos estàn muy sucios, Hay mucha mugre en todas partes en esta isla… No volvì a intentar ese rumbo porque, pasamos en auto con Denis unos dìas màs tarde, y la poca vanquina que hay cada vez se hace mas chica del pastizal creciendo alrededor… Muy arriesgado…

Another day went to explore another beach, Kauai beach, next to a big resort. Follow the main route to the north, passed the airport and no more town! Open land, a bit of a banana plantation to one side; empty fence off land as they are starting to build something, to the other side; far away the tall, beautiful Kauai’s picks!, and a bit of farm land with a few cows. The journey is quite nice tho you’re riding on the shoulder of the main route…

The road to the resort and beach has an avenue of very pretty trees with funny shape trunks and branches!

The beach it self a bit rough, lots of flat long lava or rock formations on shore, the sand is not as soft ether but a nice outing and only a couple of homeless…

Visited this place a few more times and once, I wanted to go farther north but blow up the front tyre beyond fixing so Denis had to rescue me… The roads and the whole island is quite dirty; this county doesn’t clean its roads like the other ones do so, it is very easy to have a puncher…

Just a few days later, we drove with Denis northern than this point and I noticed that the rest of the route is no nice to ride a bicycle…, possible yes, but not pleasant; that was my end of interest to go that way!…

Una vecina, que vive 6 meses en la isla y 6 en el continente, tambièn anda en bici pero tipo ciudad no màs, me contó de un lugar que lo llaman “the farm”, el campo, ahi no màs del complejo; asi que ahi sali a investigar!

Un dìa, volviendo del faro, corte camino por ahi para ver de què se trataba! Una belleza de espacio de verdes, arbustos, arboles de todo tipo, tamoño, color y variedad!!, todo con senderos de cemento. El campo en sì, crecen hierbas como perejil, menta; algunas verduras; hay frutales, palmeras, etc. En los ùltimos dìas, que empezó la primavera!, todo fue largando sus colores floridos!! Una belleza!

Despuse de haberlo recorrido dos o tres veces, Denis se enterò que había sido una cancha de golf!, parte del complejo de vacaciones, hotel y golf del Hilton; la tuvieron que cerrar para construir màs casas de vacaciones…

Me lo recorri muchas veces, seguí cada caminito de golf para aquì y para allà!, disfrutando de la soledad y verdor! Tranquilidad de ruidos no porque està pegado al aeropuerto donde los helicópteros de turismo salen cada minuto…, los aviones, en todas direcciones, cada 10!… De terror… y quieren construir casas de vacaciones ahi?…

A lady next door to our rental, she lives 6 month here and 6 in mainland; told me of a place call “The Farm”, very quite and nice to ride the bicycle! So, off I went exploring!!

On my back from the light house I cut across through the farm!, gorgeous, peaceful green space! At the farm they grow herbs, some veggies, fruit trees.

Then I went a lots of times to the area because, as Denis fund out one day, that green space used to be a golf course!, the cart paths are there the course it self is filled with all kind of natural trees, shrubs, grass! As spring was coming, all the trees were flowering!; the change by week was so pretty!

Apparently, the course was closed to develop more vacation homes belonging to the Hilton resort; tho, all this area is right next to the airport…, very noisy indeed….

Como broche de oro!, para terminar mi temporada de ciclista en Kauai!, alquilamos una bici para Denis y nos hicimos el paseo famoso del “sendero de la costa”!, en Kaa’pa. Por suerte nos tocò un dìa calmo, sin mucho viento ni sol. El sendero costea el mar, pasando en frente de complejos de vacaciones, hoteles, casas privadas, una sección màs descampada con la ruta que va al norte, ahi no màs. Super lindo! Varias personas caminando y varios turistas en bicicleta!! Ja! Ja!

To finish up my biking season in Kauai!, we rented a bike for Denis and did the famous coast trail in Kaa’pa! A trail along the coast, runs to the north following the ocean!, runs in front of hotels, resorts, houses, etc.; well used by pedestrians, runners, cyclist! Very pretty!
